Financial Support Opportunities
|
|
UCR offers a variety of multi-year fellowship packages which may include stipends up to $16,000, full or partial payment of tuition and fees, and appointment as TA or GSR. An applicant is judged on the basis of the quality of previous academic work, on the evidence of ability to do research and other creative accomplishments, and on promise of becoming a productive scholar. A contribution to the campus goal of achieving a diverse student body may also be a consideration. Fellowship/grant awards are paid from a variety of funding sources, some of which require financial data. Students who accept fellowship and/or grant awards will be required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). FAFSA forms will be available from academic departments and the Graduate Division. In addition, they are available on the US Department of Education web page and may be downloaded and printed for your use. Students who receive fellowships, TA's, GSR's and fellowship/grant awards (full and/or partial) must register for and complete a full program of study and research each quarter, remain in good academic standing and make acceptable progress toward their degree. |

Graduate students may be employed during the academic year on a part-time basis (up to, but not exceeding 50% time) as a Teaching Assistant (TA) or Graduate Student Researcher (GSR). These appointments are awarded by departments. Appointees serving at 25% time or more for the full academic quarter receive the payment of the Graduate Student Health Insurance Plan fee of $593.00/qtr as well as a Partial Fee Remission of $2,662.00/qtr . An appointment of 45% time or more as a Graduate Student Researcher during the academic year will include payment of the nonresident tuition fee, if appropriate. The estimated 2008-09 stipend for a 50% Teaching Assistantship is $1734 per month (gross pay) and $1359 for a 49% appointment as a Graduate Student Researcher. Taxes are withheld on both appointments. |

| Office of Financial Aid: Need-Based Aid |
The Office of Financial Aid assists students in meeting educational expenses they cannot afford from personal resources. Applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to be considered for any need based loans. FAFSA's are available in December for the following academic year and must be filed annually. In addition to submitting the FAFSA, various supporting materials which the office uses to determine individual financial need may be required. |
All students are classified either as residents or nonresidents of California. Residents pay no tuition, but nonresidents must pay the full quarterly tuition in addition to the other fees regardless of the number of units taken. In many cases, a student can qualify for legal residence by the second year of graduate school. New and returning graduate students are required to complete a Statement of Legal Residence (SLR). UCR students who previously completed a Statement of Legal Residence as an undergraduate must complete a new statement to confirm current residency status. All new graduate students are initially assessed non-resident tuition until the SLR is received by the Office of the Registrar and a current residency determination is complete. Final residency status is determined by the Residency Affairs Officer in the Office of the Registrar. For more information about residence for tuition purposeses please see the UCR Office of the Registrar: Statement of Legal Residence |

A mandatory health insurance plan for graduate students will be in place for the academic year. The insurance is designed to supplement the outpatient care available to all registered students through Campus Health Services. Certain academic appointees (Teaching Assistants, Graduate Student Researcher, Teaching Fellows, Associates in ______ ) serving at 25% time or more per quarter will have their premiums paid by their payroll funding source(s). Fellowship recipients whose awards pay all assessed registration fees will have their premiums paid by the fellowship. Students who can demonstrate comparable insurance coverage from another source may apply to be exempted from the mandatory plan. |
